Good morning, everyone. Did you all understand the discussion on climate change that I mentioned the other day? If not, please read it again.
Currently, the Earth is facing its greatest crisis. Global warming is speeding up, and we must do everything possible to stop it. This time, I want to clearly explain how we have benefited from the Earth while also causing its destruction. The air and oxygen that are most vital to us come from the world’s forests.
For example, in the Amazon rainforest of South America, about 15% of the rainforest has been lost due to logging. This happened because we harvested valuable timber and converted the land into farmland for cattle grazing. Tropical forests play a vital role by absorbing large amounts of CO2 and producing oxygen.
We are destroying the natural environment to sustain our comfortable lifestyle. CO2, as one of the greenhouse gases, is speeding up global warming.
Next is drinking water. Humans cannot survive without water, after all.
This water is also polluted by human activity. Water travels from clouds as rain, seeps underground to form aquifers, or is stored in dams before reaching us. Nowadays, pollutants like PFAS contaminate even this essential water, posing health risks to us. PFAS is found in everyday items such as non-stick cookware, insecticides, fire extinguishers, waterproof materials, and paints. Since PFAS does not break down naturally and builds up in our bodies, it can lead to serious health problems. Our modern, convenient way of living comes with important risks to our health, hidden in the everyday products we rely on.
Next, let’s talk about fossil fuels, which are underground resources like heavy oil, oil, and coal. We use these to produce electricity and make products such as plastics, clothes, and everyday goods. Due to their heavy usage, these resources are now running out—and have been completely depleted.
This is the outcome of efforts to make life more convenient. (Currently, unless we switch to nuclear power—despite its dangers—as a sustainable energy source, we won’t have enough electricity.)
The problem is that using fossil fuels releases large amounts of CO2, a greenhouse gas, which disturbs the atmospheric balance and speeds up global warming and climate change.
Do you understand what these issues mean? The convenient, comfortable life we currently enjoy has damaged the Earth’s natural state. This has accelerated global warming, which in turn has caused extreme heatwaves, massive floods, powerful typhoons, wildfires, declining fish populations, threats to living beings from pesticide use, and crises within plant ecosystems.
The Earth is crying out for help. We have a duty to pass it on to future generations. Everyone needs to practice self-restraint in their daily lives. It all starts close to home. Use public transportation like trains and buses whenever possible. Minimize plastic use. Eat organic, pesticide-free foods. Save electricity by turning off devices promptly. Avoid unnecessary extravagance. Small individual efforts can save our planet. Let’s protect the Earth—not only for the environment but also for our own health.
